Abstract
Production companies in Austria, especially small- and medium sized Enterprises
(SMEs) undergo significant changes. While customers increasingly demand customization of
products, companies increasingly move towards digitalization and automation of processes to
manage the increasing complexity within the processes. In this paper, these challenges were
addressed by developing a concept for a smart robotic assembly cell, that is capable of managing
a large variety of different products and reducing human-induced errors during the manufacturing
process. The concept was validated with a real-life robotic assembly-cell at the University of
Applied Sciences in Wiener Neustadt and a series of tests show promising results in managing
complex manufacturing processes by utilizing tools of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and
interconnected productions systems (IIoT).
