Abstract

The European industrial sector currently faces challenges arising primarily from the globalization of markets, demographic changes, and rising customer and quality demands, along with the associated pressure to innovate. Furthermore, the decreasing availability of raw materials necessitates a realignment and increased flexibility of the value chain. This requires the close integration and networking of all elements along the value chain – across the entire life cycle from ideation and production to distribution (Walters and Rainbird 2007).
